With a focus on handweaving, Open Lines will explore lines and grids as a means to connect and as a framework for boundless possibilities.  Lines connect people, places, and ideas. Lines form symbols and letters, facilitating visual communication. Weaving is defined by two sets of lines intersecting at right angles.  In its most basic form this creates a grid.  From the simple foundation of lines and grids, limitless patterns and objects emerge.

Open Lines brings together three textile artists from different backgrounds, with unique approaches to the art of weaving: Astrid Skibsted (@astridskibsted) Michelle Yi Martin (@m_yimartin) and

Clare Judith Lubell (@clare_judith_).

In addition to the exhibition of artwork within and around the gallery, the artists will host workshops, demonstrations and interactive activities, including:

  • Sunday, 3 November – Workshop: Yarn Winding and Colour Theory with Astrid Skibsted

  • Daily weaving demonstration in the gallery. Two small looms will be installed in the gallery giving visitors an opportunity to see weaving in action

  • An ephemeral, interactive, site-specific installation created within the Mirror Room
